Septic or Wastewater Subsurface Irrigation is a wastewater treatment system using soil to filter effluent from a septic tank. In this system, wastewater from a home or building is first treated in a septic tank to remove solids and other contaminants. The effluent then flows into a series of perforated pipes buried beneath the treatment/disbursement area.
As the effluent enters the soil, it is filtered and treated by bacteria and other microorganisms. The soil acts as a natural filter, removing contaminants and pollutants from the effluent before it reaches groundwater or surface water sources.
Wastewater subsurface irrigation systems are a more eco-friendly and sustainable wastewater treatment method.

A subsurface irrigation system will disperse the treated effluent evenly underground, delivering it to the most biologically active layer of the soil. The soil will consume residual bacteria or organic matter, and vegetation like grass will absorb the nutrients.

The effluent is dispersed through a network of polyethylene drip lines 100mm to 150mm below surface level, with lateral lines between 600mm to 1.0m apart. Your disbursement area is often to referred to as a leach field.
However, it is essential to note that sub-surface irrigation for wastewater requires careful design, installation, and maintenance to ensure they function correctly and do not contaminate nearby water sources.
Luckily, NSW councils know that subsurface irrigation has many benefits, including no human or animal contact with the treated effluent, becoming the preferred disposal method for most local governing authorities.
